Once upon a time,
in Scanno, a village in the mountains of the Abruzzo National Park, there were a lace maker and a goldsmith. The two craftsmen, couple in work as in life, decided to make the tradition current and modern.
Thanks to Federica’s skill in working the bobbin and Francesco’s experience in the goldsmith’s field, in 2012 Il Gioiello del Tombolo, a unique and never existed patented brand, was born.
The completely handmade creations are the result of two innovative methods that the two craftsmen have studied, invented and perfected over the years: the Micro bobbin method, defined by them and the perforated metal anchoring system for textile works.
Years of tradition, hard work, experimentation and passion are contained in each Gioiello del Tombolo which creation takes days, weeks and sometimes months.
The Tombolo jewels are more unique than rare precious pieces which, winking at the ancient techniques of the lace makers of the past, project their essence into the future.

My name is Federica Silvani,
I was born in Sulmona, April 20, 1972. I have a degree in philosophy achieved in 2000 at the Università degli Studi G. D’Annunzio in Chieti. As regards my professional training I attended many courses among which: the course La formazione degli insegnanti (teacher training) at Università degli Studi G. D’Annunzio with a final exam; an advanced training course Gestione delle Risorse Umane e Strategia di Impresa (management of human resources and business strategies); an updating course Inventariazione, conservazione e restauro dei beni library (inventorying, conservation and restoration of library materials) at the Università degli Studi di L’Aquila; an educational course Esperto in Marketing Aziendale (expert in corporate marketing).
Moreover I privately studied piano for six years and I did the solfeggio exam after three years of course.
As regards my past work experiences before embarking on the art of pillow lace I made substitutions at different schools in Sulmona from 2000 to 2003; from 2003 to 2008 I had a co-ordinated and continuous collaboration contract; from 2008 to 2010 I had a fixed-term contract with the provincial administration in L’Aquila.
In December 2010 after leaving that employment I decide, just for fun, to learn pillow lace with two women from Scanno, two really good teachers.
After a period of learning and training I organized in August 2012 a small exhibition in Scanno and the result was so positive that pillow lace, this wonderful art, is today my main activity.

Francesco Rotolo
Francesco Rotolo,
Goldsmith, was born in Scanno, 10th december 1967.He started his apprenticeship with his dad, Dino Rotolo, in his own shop. Thanks to him, Francesco fell in love with goldworking, inheriting family competence and traditions.
At the age of 20, he decided to measure himself with different situations and he moved to Vicenza, a leader city in goldworking and jewellery sector in Italy and al lover Europe. In this city, he worked for important goldworking companies, distributing their products on large-scale.
After about 10 years, Francesco decided to head in a new direction, facing with other different realities: in 1998 he moved to New York and worked in a jewellery in Manhattan; here, the most part of his creations are unique pieces tipical of the American reality.
In 2000 he came back to Scanno to continue the goldworking family tradition, enriching it with his professional experience and creativity, that made every single creation original.
In 2009, the Art and Craft institution of Abruzzo choose Francesco to make him realize the medal for the XVI edition of “Giochi del Mediterraneo”, a manifestation joined by 23 Nations.
A moda school in Milan contacted him to teach some lessons about the button made through precious materials’history and from 2009 he’s been training in some High Schools, with the purpose to show and teach different aspects of the goldworking art.He’s been joining expositive events since years like those in Milan, Rome, New York (Columbus Day), Malta and Spain.Francesco also shows his art through sculpture: he has made several silver works, some of them has been donated to different cultural members.Lover of arts and different cultures, his intellectual curiosity let him travel abroad join a cultural association and write down articles for a cultural journal in Scanno.In 2012 he created a System of anchorage for “Il Gioiello del Tombolo” and in 2013 he officially got the patent.
